The ‘rapper’ M-Bone was killed last month in a drive-by shooting. Yep, had me doing my best owl impression as well. Apart from inspiring some educationally sub-normal pork rinder to rugby tackle an ice cream truck…

What did this guy give the world?

Fuck all, that’s what. He was the dancer for some shit-thick one-hit wonders called Cali Swag District, although this particular dart isn’t aimed at dancers per se. (I got mad love for Scoob and Scrap.) Their single ‘Teach Me How to Dougie' exemplified the kind of eye-gougingly brain-dead sloganeering that’s been permeating hip hop for more than a hot minute now. His girl claims the shooting was the result of a particularly vicious “Twitter war” (subterranean level of respect… plummeting… even… lower). If I were lazy I’d speculate it was more likely that a disgruntled music lover, taking umbrage at the systematic debasement of hip hop that seems so de rigueur of late, flipped his wig and decided to, well, flip some wigs. But I’m not. So I won’t.

Soulja Toy and his peers don’t so much represent the nadir of rap as a new standard and reason for people to re-assess the standards by which they judge music. The days of C.R.E.A.M. bothering the upper echelons of the Billboard Rap Chart (sounds quaint, don’t it?) seem positively prehistoric. Furthermore, Britain’s premier self-congratulatory art-wank music rag The Wire recently praised contemporary MCs for eschewing the stiflingly high lyrical standards of their elders. Yes, you read that right. The godbodys of yesteryear were too smart for you.

No, his month’s dart is aimed at the filling in C.S.D.s shit sandwich of a name.

The word ‘swag’.

Since the commodification of rap, the marketing man’s M.O. has echoed William Burroughs’ summary of that of the heroin dealer: “He degrades and simplifies the client”. Swag is merely another example of this. Bling was probably the first instance in my lifetime that a single slang word captured the supernaturally retarded collective consciousness of the casual listener and semiotically, it came to represent so much more than reflected light. It represented the inflation of stupidity and the falling salary of intelligence. It represented the reduction of complex culture to idiotic buzzword. Most of all, it represented the contempt with which the music industry regards the listener, be that not entirely undeserved. This phenomenon reared its scrote-ugly head once more with the ubiquity of crunk (Crunk Juice?!? Go fuck yourself hard). Now we have songs that resemble nothing more than extended advertisements and lyricists who make Tim Dog sound like Ezra Pound.

Ice T was almost right when he said that Soulja Boy single-handedly killed hip hop. The music is still breathing but Soulja Boy’s success and successors are subjecting it to death by a thousand cuts. I can only hope that when he eventually crashes and burns, people have the good sense to piss on his corpse after he flatlines.

All shit-talking aside, I was genuinely saddened to hear that Lloyd Knibb, drummer for the legendary Skatalites passed away May 12th. Respect is most definitely due.

So, the miscreants, cellar-dwellers and multiple personalities at Bad Taste have asked me to ugly up some space in this here blog. Thankfully previous attempts have set the bar limbo-low and as such the malaise of too much daytime TV and wank no. 7 hardly seem obstacles to producing something adequate. Even so, to fill this with cut ‘n’ paste pictures of Haile Selassie, dollar bills and genetically harmonic gun-toting rednecks would be a waste of my time and yours. Herein lies the conceit of every writer, musician and bar stool philosopher; the belief that their noise is essential and need be heard over the surrounding cacophony of artistic self-importance. Good copy, bad taste, low bars and high expectations.

Sheeeeeeeeeeit…

We could over-intellectualise about Binary Opposition and the arbitrary nature of cultural value but quite frankly, I’d rather bite my fingertips off and juggle salt & vinegar crisps. I guess it comes back to the name on the label.

Can taste be bad or good?

Can aesthetic considerations fairly conceive of absolutes?

Do I mean bad in the Run DMC sense?

I’ve mouth-hoovered the depths of my own degradation from time to time, yet even the lowest ebbs of revulsion are often tempered by the sense of excitement a pioneer might feel in uncharted territory. The psychic distance between good taste and bad may be the mechanical distance between smile and frown.

Me? I’ll take bad taste over good most days. Ask yourself; Big L threatening to rape Jesus with a machine gun or Common free-associating about camomile tea and his girl’s organic cotton headwrap? I guess what I’m trying to say is that good hip hop is almost always in the worst possible taste and resists taking itself too seriously. Cold gettin’ dumb is a conscious decision and Biz Markie is a legend precisely because he understands what he is – an entertainer. Dead Prez, on the other hand, made one good tune (no prizes for guessing that) and spent the rest of their time patronising their audience and throwing out trite clichés over uninspired beats. Now, I’m not saying good music can’t be ideologically motivated. What I am saying is that the music should never be subordinate to the polemic. And for all you ‘conscious’ heads out there that fiend for the politically subversive, why bother with records? Just print the lyrics. Or better yet, steal the inlay card if you’re so fucking hardcore!

Anne Frank once wrote that “there is one golden rule to keep before you; laugh about everything”.

But what the fuck did she know? She lived in a cupboard. Anyway, I’ve wasted enough of the time you could be spending sweating over your homeboy’s girlfriends’ holiday snaps. I’ll leave the finer points of the good/bad dichotomy to Akinyele and G Rap.

The tune’s AIDS-sick, the lyrics as offensive as they come and what’s more, the 12” changes hands for four-figure sums. How’s that for Bad Taste? Anywho, this is me signing off. Next time I promise less big words and more bile.

Diabolik is the moniker of Sheffield beatmaker K.I.D.L.I.B, who was inspired to make a mixtape after watching the 1968 film Danger: Diabolik. The aim was to make one long track that merges original productions with classic rap vocals. The first installment, released on Planet Terror in late 2009, was so successful that it is presented here along with part 2 - The Valmont Version. Well worth checking out for fans of swaggering hip hop beats with a jazzy flavour.

This years Tramlines Festival was amazing, from the bands to the DJ's to the punters Sheffield represented to the fullest! We'd like to thank everyone who came to our Tramlines party last Friday, it was roadblock business and full of good vibes so bigup yourselves! We will hopefully be doing more nights at Sawa Bar in the future, it's a tidy venue. Got plenty of pictures to upload from the festival really soon so watch this space... There's also some exciting releases in the pipeline, all will be revealed in the next week or so!
